The epic film which reportedly cost Disney a $200 million dollar loss is tearing up the home video front as John Carter tops the home video sales. The film which stars Taylor Kitsch has taken the top spot on both Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Lets hope that John Carter will make enough money for Disney on the home video sales to warrant a sequel to the fantastic sci-fi epic from Andrew Stanton. If you enjoyed the original film and demand that Disney make a sequel I highly recommend you head on over to Take me back to Barsoom! I want John Carter to have a sequel which is a dedicated group organised to help make a sequel to John Carter possible.

From Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes John Carter—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

John Carter is currently available Disney 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray and DVD.

  1. Hi Stephen,
What great news indeed that John Carter is selling like hot cakes! When I went to Best Buy to buy my copy, I actually bought the last one that was on the shelf specifically for John Carter. People are now seeing it and falling in love with it! I was fortunate to see it three times in the theater, something that I rarely do! It reminded me of when I was a kid watching those grand adventurous family style movies with my dad. These type of films just are not made nowadays. I certainly do hope a sequel is indeed made, for if ever a film deserves one it is this!
One last note, I belong to the FB “Take me back to Barsoom” group and it is a wonderful group of ERB and John Carter fans indeed who are really campaigning for a sequel. Come join us!

  2. John Carter never deserved the treatment it got! It should never have even been associated with the word “failure”. I’m SO happy to see it finally getting the positive attention it deserves. Some haters will hate, but I’ve heard from a few who have now changed their tune. Maybe this will finally teach people that listening to critics isn’t the best idea. People, you need to watch it and draw your own conclusions instead of letting jaded strangers tell you what to like. Thanks for a great article!

  10. Bram Spenstaff says:

This is fantastic news. I have been waiting for a ‘Barsoom’ film for ages, ever since I read the books as a kid. I had some skepticism as to whether or not Disney could capture the feel of the books, and when I saw it, I was not disappointed. What I WAS disappointed with the seemingly lack of care on Disney’s behalf at marketing this thing, and it’s poor box office sales. Glad to see that the home video releases are tearing it up on one.

  11. I was lucky enough to have seen this movie in March in the IMAX and
loved this movie. I have been telling friends and family until I was
blue in the face how good this movie was. And now the people who were
scared off by the media flop reports and the critics animosity anr now
finding out for themselves what I discovered in March. That John Carter
is a good movie that got a raw deal. . The only hype this movie received
was bad press . Thank you to the word of mouth of the
fans of this movie for changing the buzz. Hey Disney Take me back to
Barsoom, I want the trilogy that Andrew Stanton envisioned .

  12. Ned says:

Thank you Stephen! John Carter does not deserve to go down in Hollywood history as a “flop”. As a proud member of the facebook page “Take Me Back To Barsoom”, I appreciate you mentioning our group!

  13. Thanks for this awesome post! We’ll make it Back to Barsoom yet :)

  14. John Small says:

This movie DESERVES a sequel. And I wish people would please stop calling it a flop; no movie with this kind of fan support can be considered a failure, regardless of what the critics say.

  15. JC Fan 4 Life says:

John Carter rocked! America is insane in its choice of picking box office winners (The Avengers is the sole exception). Bring on the sequel!

  16. Chris Farley says:

Great movie for all ages. Take it home on DVD/Blu-ray and support the quest for a sequel

  17. Thanks so much for a very supportive article. I’ve been talking up this movie everywhere since March 9 and I’m very glad people are taking notice. I bought an extra copy of the DVD that I use as a loaner copy and have been letting people at my gym watch it. The young lady who does the Zumba classes, obviously in the demographic that the Twilight and Hunger Games movies goes after, passed it on to another gym employee today. She gives the movie 5 out of 5 stars and while she loved Woola and the romance, the part she couldn’t stop laughing at was John Carter learning how to walk on an alien planet. She plans to buy a copy for herself.

  18. Robert C says:

Let me say we are gaining momentum as more people are joining us everyday saying they want a sequel to the John Carter movie.I keep hereing that Store after store around the country are selling out or running low on DVD’S and BLU-RAY copies of the John Carter movie.

  19. Bob Ooi says:

Awesome News! I’m really hoping they made a sequel… This story is too good to shelve it…

  20. Stephen says:

Hi guys, to everyone that has posted such kind words I really appreciate it as it has made my day waking up to 18 comments in my email box! I think you have officially blown the record for most comments on a post, so I thank you. Unfortunately ‘John Carter’ isn’t available in Australia yet :( It is out next month and you can beat that I will be purchasing the Blu-ray on day one! It is great to see all the support the Facebook group and everyone apart of the Facebook group are doing so FANTASTIC work!! Lets continue to demand this sequel and get ‘John Carter 2′ into production ASAP!!

  21. I found JOHN CARTER to be a fine and satisfying epic interplanetary adventure with heart, humor, ROMANCE, action, great dialog, wonderful characters, amazing creatures, heroic music, vast Martian landscapes, engaging story arcs, visual style and…WOOLA!!!!!!!!!!!
I recommend that you watch this film with your family and have a great evening of movie viewing.

  22. Great news! Hopefully Disney will recognize that there IS indeed an audience for a John Carter (of Mars) movie franchise.

  23. Kenneth Jordan says:

Stephen Parry, thanks so much for this great positive write-up about a great film, John Carter! I saw it 12 times at the theater, five in IMAX 3D, five in Real 3D, and twice in 2D. The movie is a dazzling, fun, entertaining, and exciting sci-fi action-adventure movie and I’m so excited that millions of movie fans are now discovering what I realized from my first viewing!

I’d also like to say, “Congratulations, Andrew Stanton and the entire case and crew for this great start for John Carter on the home video market! Your fans love the movie!!”

Thank you again for this review, and for the mention of the sequel movement, “Take Me Back To Barsoom!”

Go John Carter – make millions on the home video market!!

  24. Bob Deane says:

Great news! John Carter is the type of film that just doesnt get made anymore. I am a long time Burroughs fan, but my wife had no idea about the series when we saw the film together. I had only said that i really wanted to see it and she went with me. She loved it. At the end of the film she commented “What a great movie! When will it be available on Blu Ray? ” Well, WE are getting it this Father’s Day! I truly hope there is a sequel, there is just do much storytelling in this series that begs to be put on the screen. Take us back to Barsoom!

  25. Wesley Lima says:

continuation for John Carter ,,pliz!!!!!! ^ ^,,,brazil in twisted for John Carter 2

  26. Ian Jones says:

Just watched the movie today back to back two times…the movies is hands down one of the best i have seen yet as far as storyline…cgi work…and non stop action…keeps you interested and rooting for him to take his stand and win the woman he is obviously falling for in the movie…makes one hope you could find a transport of sorts like that and become your own hero for a planet…the had to be a sequel nk way they are gonna let carter get away with killing another eternal and going back to barsoom without a fight…i would be sadly disappointed if this movie could not generate the post box office sales to save the loss and inspire the original cast and makers to make another great hit because i know its there waiting to be made.

  27. Mark H says:

The success or failure of a movie should no longer be mainly determined by box office sales. In an age where far more people now wait for the DVD release than go to see films at the cinema it is DVD sales and box office tickets combines that should determine overall success or failure of a franchise.

  28. I got scared when I saw Disney was producing. But got proven wrong. This is J E Burroughs John Carter. Looking forward to seeing the Warlord of Mars emerging on screen as well as in the books.

  29. A bit of a downer was the audio commentary by the producers on the dvd. Unfortunately talking about everything around the movie but not about what you see on screen. Nothing about the actors or the fun stuff at all. In one word: Boring.

  30. Arthur says:

join the facebook group guys, this movies NEEDS a sequel !

  31. cecily ruvalcaba says:

    John Carter needs a sequel!!!

  32. Daria Brooks says:

“John Carter” never “lost” $200m in the first place–that was just an estimate of profits Disney claims to have expected. How that’s possible when they only spent a measly $1m on advertising is beyond me. No matter: By the time the DVD was released, everyone knew how great this movie is, even to the point of stealing it off the shelves! (It literally became the No.1 most pirated and most stolen DVD of 2012)! Even crooks know how criminal Disney’s treatment of this amazing film has been and how they’ve been lying about the sales totals–and it’s time for the SEC to investigate. Fans are Tweeting #JohnCarterSequel and storming the WWW today on the 1st anniversary of its release, but we’ll be boycotting all things Disney starting tomorrow!

  33. jsw7533 says:

One of my favorite movies of last year – it looks beautiful in Blu-Ray!
