Guillermo Del Toro, the visionary director of Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy 1 & 2 will direct a retelling of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. There has been many versions of this tale released to film, of course the most notable being Disney’s animated version in 1991. With the recent re-release of the film in 3D and last years Beastly, is there a current craze for the timeless story? Variety recently broke a story saying that Del Toro has decided to step into the directors seat, previously only set to produce.
When Harry Potter star Emma Watson was announced to be in final negotiations to star in this new re-telling, it raised an eyebrow of interest. With a wrap up on the billion dollar franchise Harry Potter coming to an end plus her most recent film My Week With Marilyn in cinemas now, her next role will be in The Perks of Being a Wallflower which is set to come out later this year. This should let Watson be free for a shoot early next year.
Of course this is Hollywood and anything can happen so stay tuned as further details get announced.
- Andrew Davies who wrote Bridget Jones’ Diary will pen the script
